Obituary

Tommy was one the sweetest, kindest, most intelligent men that you would ever meet, He was devoted to his mom, Ella Mae (Lewis) Mayhood who preceded him in death.

He was preceded in death by his father, Martin Lewis Mayhood and his mother, Ella Mae Mayhood, his two brothers Wayne and Melvin. He was survived by his sister, Mary Ella Chernosky by 2 days as she passed away two days later than Tommy. He is survived by his nieces, nephews, and cousins.

His entire life revolved around teaching and history. He dearly loved teaching. His students were his world. Many of whom he kept in contact with long after graduation. He began his teaching career in August of 1977 after graduating with honors from Houston Baptist University. He taught for a little more than 40 years for the Dayton Independent School District at the high school retiring in December of 2017.

Tommy's only other love was history. He researched his family history as far back as 1400 and the amazing historical narratives that he told were remarkable. He was very involved with many historical societies and cemetery associations. A couple of his favorite historical groups were the Sons and Daughters of the American Confederacy. He was driven to preserve many of the confederate graves in area cemeteries. Due to his diligence some of the history of this area of Texas is now preserved for posterity.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
