Obituary

Robert James McCann, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and cherished community member, passed away on September 5, 2024 at the age of 82 surrounded by his loved ones.

Robert grew up in Shreveport, LA, where he graduated from C.E. Byrd High School. He later attended Baylor University in Waco, TX, where he played baseball and became an avid lifelong fan of the Baylor Bears. In 1963, Robert met the love of his life, Jere', in Houston, TX, and the two were married in 1964.

After beginning his career with Southwestern Bell in Houston, Robert and his family moved to Huntsville, TX, where he settled for the remainder of his life. He spent time ranching before discovering his true passion for education, teaching business courses at Sam Houston State University. His love for teaching extended into his faith, where he spent decades teaching Sunday School, finding great joy and purpose in sharing his knowledge and wisdom.

Robert was a fixture of the Huntsville community for over 55 years. He was passionate about serving others and was deeply involved in various facets of the community. As a founding member of Elkins Lake Baptist Church, he played a vital role in shaping the church's mission. He also helped develop Sam Houston National State Bank, where he served as president, and later held the position of president at Huntsville National Bank. In the latter part of his career, Robert founded McCann Financials, which he led until his retirement.

Upon retiring, Robert embraced his favorite role—being a full-time grandparent. He was deeply involved in his grandchildren's lives and found immense joy in watching them grow. Additionally, Robert's love for coaching shone as he mentored his son Sam's baseball teams from childhood through high school. He had a profound impact on the lives of many young men, fostering their development both on and off the field.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Loye McCann; his mother, Johnnie Baker McCann; his brother, Randall McCann; his sister, Patricia McCann Castrogiovanni; his father-in-law, Robert Eugene Samuel; mother-in-law, Opal McAdams Samuel; and his brother-in-law, Robert Samuel, and wife Marcella Samuel.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Jere' Samuel McCann; his brother, Michael McCann, and wife Sherri McCann of St. Louis, MO; his children, Robert James McCann Jr. of Willis, TX, Samuel Loye McCann and wife Michelle McCann of Huntsville, TX, and Christy McCann McWhorter and fiancé Richard Dailey of Dallas, TX. He also leaves behind his adored grandchildren, Caroline Rae McWhorter, Catherine Belle McWhorter, and Drew Rodden McWhorter, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Robert James McCann's legacy of kindness, service, and love for his family and community will forever be remembered. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
