Rafael Saumell-Muñoz, died peacefully in his home on June 30, 2023. He spent his last days surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jill Saumell, his children Michael Saumell-Baston, William Saumell, Benjamin Saumell, and Isabel Saumell.  He is preceded in death by his parents and oldest son, Abdel Saumell-Baston.

Rafael was born on June 20, 1951, in Havana, Cuba, the son of Rafael Saumell-Perez and Pura Muñoz. While in Cuba, Rafael was a script writer and director of radio and television shows. He is a former Political Prisoner which empowered him to speak out about Human Rights.  He immigrated to the United States in 1988.  Soon after, he received his Doctorate from Washington University.  Rafael spent 27 years teaching Spanish and French at Sam Houston State University where he would retire as Professor Emeritus. During his career he earned several distinguished honors and awards.  Rafael was an accomplished writer of books and numerous articles and essays which are published in academic journals in America and Europe.

Rafael was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music.  His family and friends will miss his sense of humor and vast knowledge of history and world events.

A Memorial Reception will be held on July 5, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Heritage Oak Funeral Home.
