Nell Bailey Miller Johnston Smith, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2024. Born on April 13, 1928, in Lufkin, TX, Nell's life was a testament to resilience, kindness, and an unmatched zest for life.

Nell experienced profound loss early and often, yet channeled this into a life of service and dedication. Her commitment to University Heights Baptist Church was deep, as she contributed to many community services over the decades and was always ready to lend a hand or an ear. Nell was a staunch supporter and passionate about establishing the HEARTS Veterans Museum of Texas in Huntsville, TX.

She was known for her sharp wit and intelligence and was an avid square dancer for much of her life. She was famous for her Parker House Rolls, a treat anticipated by family and friends at every gathering. Her knack for numbers was legendary; she memorized and recalled every friend and family member's birthday and phone number, ensuring a card was sent or a call made without fail.

Nell was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Lee Miller and Clyde "Mickey" Johnston; her three children, U.S. Air Force Major Curtis Daniel Miller, Alan Kent Miller, and Paulette Lois Mumme (nee Miller); her granddaughter, Christy Miller Hollerich; parents Curtis Bailey and Claudia Bailey Horton; as well as siblings, Athalene Bailey Burkhalter and Bernel Bailey.

Despite the tragic losses, Nell found love and companionship again with her surviving husband, Donald Smith, who became her true life partner in later years. Nell leaves behind a loving legacy. Survivors include son-in-law Bruce Mumme; daughters-in-law Susan Miller and Theresa Miller; six grandchildren: Marty Mumme, Melodi Mumme Dimbleby and husband Richard, Melissa Mumme Kinney & husband Zachary, Amanda Miller Conner & husband Donald, Meredith Miller Austin & husband Ryan, and Veronica Miller & husband Toby. Also surviving are eleven great-grandchildren and four step-children, Timothy Johnston, Martha Johnston Cocoros, Gary Smith, and Marcie Baynham; sisters Jean Montes and Melva van Schoubroek, along with many nieces and nephews.

A viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 23 at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at University Heights Baptist Church, 2400 Sycamore Ave, Huntsville, TX 77340. Burial will occur at 3:00 PM at the Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 5205 S First Street, Lufkin, TX 75901.
