Loran was born to parents Loran Rhine and DeAlva Whitener Rhine on December 9, 1940. He grew up in White Settlement, Texas and graduated from C.F. Brewer High school. He met his wife Sylvia Holland in November of 1959 and they were married in October of 1960.
He joined the U.S. Navy when he was a junior in high school and went on active duty in January of 1960. In 1965, he was selected by the Navy to attend college on a full scholarship in the Naval Science & Engineering program (NESEP) at the University of New Mexico. He was the first NESEP candidate to successfully complete the program earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy. He later went on to complete a Masters of Science degree at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He had many assignments and responsibilities that included: Naval Flight Officer Airborne Communications Officer, Mission Commander, Navigator, and his last assignment as Test Director for the Field Command Defense Nuclear Agency in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
After retirement from the military, he worked for Texas Instruments and Raytheon for a combined 21 years. He then worked for 2 years for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a facilities design engineer until his final retirement. He then enjoyed his favorite hobbies playing golf and bowling.
Loran was preceded in death by his wife Sandy, his brother Roy, his sister Barbara, his sister Genna and his son David. He is survived by his son Michael and his wife Toni, his daughter Cindy, and daughter-in-law Chris Fraser. He was blessed with 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Heritage Oak Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Monday, October 14, 2024 at 10:15 AM at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
