Obituary

Liberty C. Pollard

1925 – 2023

Liberty Chomout Pollard passed away on October 4, 2023.  Liberty was a first-generation American born on October 22, 1925 to Anton and Annie Chomout.  After graduating from El Campo High School, Liberty earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Sam Houston State, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Philos (now Zeta Tau Alpha).

She married J. M. Pollard on January 23, 1947 and they had one son, Randy Dean.  Liberty taught elementary and middle school in Danevang, Conroe and Huntsville for 38 years, and was an avid gardener with many awards for her roses.  She enjoyed sharing them with the community, and J.M. frequently took her roses to The Café Texan where he went every morning to drink coffee.  She enjoyed doing arts and crafts and loved traveling; her favorite place in the USA was Yellowstone and in Europe, she loved her trips to Rome.

She was an outstanding teacher and often integrated her travel experiences into her teaching, to the delight of her students, many of whom have remembered her fondly decades later.  She loved Texas History and considered herself very fortunate to teach it.  Liberty was a Life Member of Texas State Teachers Association and Sam Houston State University Alumni Association.

She is survived by her son Randy and his wife Trisha of Bellaire, Texas: grandchildren Matthew Pollard, Jennifer (Kyle) Switzer and Jonathan (Emily) Pollard, and great grandchildren Dean, Kate and Abby Switzer, as well as her sister Shirley Chomout Schneider and her brother Richard Chomout, both of El Campo, three nephews and a niece.  She was preceded in death by husband J. M.

The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, October 12, 2023 from 5-7 PM followed by a Rosary prayer service at 7 at Heritage Oak Funeral Home (1080 I-45 in Huntsville).  Funeral Mass will be at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church (1603 Avenue N in Huntsville) on Friday, October 13 at 10 AM, followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Pollard Family Endowed Scholarship benefitting teachers seeking advanced degrees at Sam Houston State University, P.O. Box 2537, Huntsville, TX 77341-2537 or online at https://www.shsu.edu/dept/university-advancement/donate.html.
