The family of Joyce Mitchell McLaughlin, of Huntsville, is saddened to announce that she passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the age of 90 in Conroe, Texas. Joyce was born on July 25, 1932, in Huntsville to Rufus Earnest Mitchell and Mary Edith Brooks Mitchell. Joyce grew up in Huntsville and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1949. She attended Sam Houston State Teacher's College, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1952.

Joyce and William Platt McLaughlin were married on June 26, 1954, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. They had two daughters, Cheryl Anne and Mary Susan. Joyce taught for 27 years in New Waverly, Huntsville, Klein, Conroe, and Boling School Districts.

Joyce enjoyed listening to music, reading, traveling, having lunch with friends, and playing bridge. She made spending time with the family a priority. Joyce enjoyed spending time at the family farm west of Huntsville, where she helped to sell Christmas trees and raise cattle. She also enjoyed family vacations.

Joyce is survived by her daughter Cheryl and her husband George Washington of Wharton. She is also survived by her grandsons Robert Austin and William Travis Washington of Wharton, and grandson Michael Walker and wife Autumn of Huntsville. She has two great grandchildren, Payton Pulling and Wesley Platt Walker of Huntsville.

Joyce is preceded in death by her twin sister Mary Loyce Mitchell, her parents, daughter Susan McLaughlin Sylvester, sisters Linda Mitchell Parrish and Sue Mitchell Adams. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Platt McLaughlin, with whom she enjoyed 61 years of marriage.

Joyce was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to FUMC Huntsville. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Village Green in Conroe and Altus Hospice for the love and care given.

Visitation for Joyce will be held Wednesday June 14, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Heritage Oak Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at Heritage Oak Funeral Home on Thursday June 15, 2023 at 2:00 PM with the graveside service to follow at Mayes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery.
