John Edgar Elliston, 79, of Huntsville, Texas, was born in Houston, Texas, to Charles Edgar and Johnnie Dell Elliston. When he was 15, his family moved to New Waverly, Texas, a place that would always feel like home.

He passed away at MD Anderson after a 4 year battle with cancer. His caring family was at his side.

John graduated from New Waverly High School and later attended Stephen F. Austin State University, earning a degree in forestry and biology - fields that perfectly reflected his lifelong love of the outdoors.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy , including service in Vietnam. His military service shaped his quiet strength, sense of duty, and deep appreciation for life.

After returning home, John began his career with Ralston Purina, working at a mushroom farm in Madisonville, Texas, before transferring to California. Those years on the West Coast were special to John and his wife, filled with exploration and appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounded them. In time, their hearts led them back to Texas, where they settled in Huntsville.

For more than 20 years, John worked with Gibbs brothers in land surveying and timber management. Later, he enjoyed being self-employed as a landman and surveyor. His happiest days were spent outdoors, wearing his well-loved Red Wing boots, listening to the birds, and quietly taking in the nature around him.

Above all else, John treasured his family. He is survived by his best friend, high school sweetheart, and wife of 56 years, Ursula; his son, Jason Eli, of Eureka, California; his daughter, Christy, and her husband, Eirk, of The Woodlands, Texas; and his beloved granddaughters, who brought him endless joy and filled his life with laughter, curiosity, and new adventures.

The family will hold a private celebration of John's life. His and Urs's final resting place will be in East and Central Texas, and along the West Coast - places that reflect the land he loved and the life he lived.
