John Charles Boyce, 76, was born on 23 October 1946 in Tyler, Smith County, Texas to Charles Ward Boyce, Jr and Mary Virginia Bennett Boyce. He passed away at his home in Midway, Madison County, Texas on 12 March 2023 due to declining health.

By 1948, John was living with his parents and older brother, James, in Walker County, Texas at Country Campus between present-day Huntsville and Riverside. Sam Houston State Teachers College (SHSTC) in Huntsville had purchased the vacated WWII, prisoner of war camp, and converted the barracks into duplexes to rent to the newly returned veterans with families, who would be attending SHSTC on the GI Bill. John's father was one of those veterans. His Dad, who had attended college before entering the Army Air Corp in 1942 was scheduled to graduate from SHSTC in 1949, but unfortunately, he suffered a massive stroke in June 1948 and died. This resulted in John, his mother, and brother having to move to San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas to live closer to his Grandmother Bennett and other relatives. John grew up in San Angelo and was in seventh grade when his family moved to Oakhurst, San Jacinto County, Texas, in 1958 after the death of his grandmother. John and his mother and brother would be living near their Mother's other siblings that had remained in East Texas.

After graduating from Coldspring High School in 1965, John entered Sam Houston State University where he graduated with a B. S. degree in Industrial Arts. He returned to Coldspring High School to teach, but realized that he did not enjoy teaching, so he applied to Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville. Nearly thirty years later, in 1999, he retired from TDCJ, working all those years at the Ellis Unit. After retirement he became a certified jailer. This lead to John's employment by the Walker County Fair Association as director of maintenance and overseeing county jail inmates in their maintenance work. With his health beginning to fail, John retired once again, after working nearly twenty years for the WCFA.

John was a member of Mt. Moriah, Lodge 37, AF & AM in Coldspring for over thirty-five years, during which time he was lodge secretary for over sixteen years. He, also, served as District Deputy Grand Master, 2008-2009. John and Lunette were faithful members of Phelps Methodist Church for many years. John was an accomplished mandolin player, entertaining family and friends for decades.

John is survived by his daughter, Becky Flarity (Joe), from his first marriage to Joyce Aden; two nephews, Charles (Terri) Boyce and Bill (Joy) Boyce, three great-nephews, two great-nieces, and sister-in-law, Ynette Boyce.

Preceding John in death are his parents, his brother, and his wife of thirty years, Lunette. John is, also, survived by Lunette's children from a previous marriage: Raychell Tidwell (Drew), Clifton LeBlanc II (Kristy), and Michael LeBlanc (Abigail), Lu's eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Ólafia Ingvarsdóttir.

Also, surviving, John, are cousins by the dozens and countless friends.
