Jimmy Lee Smith, a cherished resident of Huntsville, Texas, departed this life on May 13, 2026 to join his heavenly home after a courageous year and a half battle with cancer.

Jim was born on June 1, 1956, in Sendai, Japan, to Delbert Lewis Smith and Hatsue Sato Smith. From an early age, his life was shaped by a rich blend of cultures and a deep appreciation for music—something that would become his lifelong calling.

He graduated from Hitchcock High School with the Class of 1974 and soon followed his passion to Sam Houston State University. There, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education in 1978 and later completed his Master's in Education in 1985. It was also during this season of life that Jim began building the foundation of what mattered most to him—family and faith.

On March 17, 1979, Jim married the love of his life, Vickie Heaton Smith. Together, they built a life centered on love, dedication, and shared purpose, celebrating 47 years of marriage.

That same year, Jim began what would become a remarkable 34-year career in music education. As a beloved and respected Band Director of the Hornet Military Marching Band in Huntsville ISD from 1979 to 2002, and later at Willis ISD until his retirement in June 2013, he devoted his life to shaping young musicians and inspiring generations of students. His classroom and marching field was more than a place to learn music—they were a place where discipline, confidence, and passion were nurtured.

Beyond the band hall, Jim's love for music never faded. An accomplished tubist, he performed in his early years as a musician for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and most recently with the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, where he was admired not only for his talent but also for his kindness and steady presence, even when his health began to decline.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Vickie; his daughter, Jennifer Graves and husband Andy of Huntsville; his son, Jason Smith and wife Macy of Montgomery; and his cherished grandchildren, Colton Graves, and Matthew, Mason, and Mellani Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Daniel Smith and his wife Diane of Everman, TX, and mother-in-law, Margie Heaton of Huntsville, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews across the United States and Japan.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Mark Smith.

In his final days, Jim was surrounded by care and compassion. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of 1st Choice Hospice, especially his former band student, Dr. Karin Olson, as well as Amanda, Alexys, Brooke, Phee and Vanessa, whose kindness meant so much during this time.

A visitation will be held on Monday, May 18 from 5 PM to 7 PM at Heritage Oak Funeral Home, where friends, family and former band students may gather to honor his legacy. A funeral service celebrating Jim's life will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, May 19 at Northside Baptist Church, 1207 FM 980, Huntsville, TX 77340. A private family interment will follow at McAdams Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Jimmy L. Smith Memorial Music Scholarship Fund . Through this fund, Jim's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.

Jim lived a life of purpose, harmony, and unwavering devotion—to his family, his students, and his music. His legacy will continue to resonate in the generations of lives he touched.
