Jimmy David Hurst, 84, of New Waverly, Texas, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, August 22, 2025, with his beloved wife, Phyllis, by his side.

He was born on August 24, 1940, at his Aunt Vi's home in Bowlegs, Oklahoma.

David is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, of 67 years; sons Tony Hurst and wife Mindy, Timothy Hurst and Jeannette LeGrange; grandchildren Brandon Hurst, Brittany Fox and husband Dave, Brad Hurst, Megan Hurst, and Jessica Bauler and husband John; along with thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, JC and Jimmie Hurst, his brothers Bobby and Raymon, and sister Melody.

David attended Pleasant Grove High School, where he met his sweetheart, Phyllis. They married on May 18, 1958. At age 18, David enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served for three and a half years. After his service, the couple settled in Houston, where David attended the University of Houston for two years. He worked as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service before beginning a 29-year career at a chemical plant.

A man with a spirit of adventure and love for the outdoors, David loved riding motorcycles and taking memorable trips to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone with his brother-in-law, Lee Loudermilk, his son Tony, longtime friend Earl Stone, and co-worker Frankie Contreras. He also passed on his love of hunting and fishing to his sons and grandson, Brandon, through many shared adventures. He and Phyllis enjoyed numerous snow skiing trips with family and friends, as well as travels with close friends James and KD Sword—including a hot air balloon ride in California, a seaplane adventure in Maine, and several Caribbean cruises.

In 2008, David and Phyllis moved to New Waverly, where they found joy in their 16-acre property. David especially loved caring for his Paint horses, a passion he shared with his daughter-in-law, Mindy. Raised by an Oklahoma cattle rancher, David never lost his love of livestock and, even in later years, took great pleasure in watching the cows and calves graze on the property.

During David's journey with Alzheimer's in recent years, Phyllis was deeply supported by their sons and families. Tony, Mindy, and grandson Brandon, who live on the property, provided daily assistance, while Tim and his family in Conroe offered invaluable help with Dr. appointments and other needs.

Pallbearers are Brad Hurst, Brandon Hurst, Jason Ramz, Dale Loudermilk, Brandon Loudermilk, and Ryan Loudermilk. Honorary pallbearers are David Fox, John Bauler, James Sword, Mike Serres, Dave Kasprzak, and Frankie Contreras.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to "The Gathering Place" of Huntsville and Conroe for the joy and fellowship they provide each month for Alzheimer's patients. They also extend
sincere thanks for the many kind gestures from friends and family, as well as to the dedicated caregivers at Houses of Harmony—Nicole, Jessica, and Tanesha—and Amanda, Brooke, and Vanessa from First Choice Hospice, for the compassionate care they provided.

Above all, David will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his love of adventure, and his unwavering devotion to his family.
