Jan was born in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Her parents were Arthur Harry and Jeanette L. Goodman. She later attended Bob Jones University, where she was a cheerleader and met the love of her life, Emmett Solomon. They were married on December 22, 1957. Soon after their marriage, Emmett felt a calling from the Lord and left his accounting studies to pursue theology in New York. During this time, Jan lovingly supported their growing family and welcomed the birth of their two sons.

Following Emmett's graduation, he accepted an internship as a chaplain at the Walls Unit in Huntsville, Texas, which later led to full-time employment as chaplain at the Eastham Unit in Lovelady. While living at Eastham, their sons attended Lovelady ISD, and Jan returned to school at Sam Houston State University to complete her education degree.

After graduating, Jan was asked by Principal H.T. Deaton to establish the kindergarten program at Lovelady ISD, becoming its very first kindergarten teacher. She continued her education at Sam Houston State University, earning a master's degree in education. Over the years, Jan faithfully served in many roles—first as a teacher, then as a diagnostician for Houston County, followed by work with Windham School District. Her passion for special education eventually led her back to Sam Houston State University, where she became a professor teaching special education.

After many years in higher education, Jan chose to slow down while still serving the field she loved. She began evaluating student teachers across the state of Texas, a role she fulfilled through employment with Texas A&M University. At the remarkable age of 83, Jan retired from the education system, finally hanging up her ruler after a lifetime of service.

Jan's life's mission was to encourage young people to pursue education and prepare for their futures. Outside of her devotion to family, her greatest joy was witnessing the success of the countless students she taught and mentored. Nothing brought her more pride than being recognized by former students—whether a former kindergartener or a college graduate. She remembered them all, and each greeting made her glow.

Alongside her professional career, Jan was deeply involved in ministry alongside her husband. She faithfully supported Emmett's Informs Ministry and was actively engaged with the Hospitality House in Huntsville. Whenever there was a need—whether in education or ministry—Jan was always ready to serve.

Jan is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Jeanette Goodman, her husband, Emmett Solomon, and her son, Matthew Solomon.

Jan is survived by her son, Mark Solomon; daughter-in-law, Laurie Solomon; grandchildren Amanda Saldana and husband Roger, Stephanie Adkins and husband Russell, and Stephen Solomon and wife Alli; and great-grandchildren Wyatt Saldana, Elias Saldana, and Isla Solomon.

Her legacy of faith, education, service, and love will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.
