Ishmael Caton "Dusty" Rhodes, Jr., 77, of Oakhurst, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025 surrounded by family and friends. A devoted husband, father, teacher, and servant of God, Dusty's life was one marked by faith, integrity, and a lasting commitment to music and education.

Born on March 7, 1948, in Houston, Texas, Dusty was the son of the late Ishmael Rhodes, Sr. and Billie Jo Rhodes. He graduated from Milby High School in 1966 and pursued his passion for music at Sam Houston State University, earning a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1971 followed by a Master of Education in 1975. On May 15, 1971, he married the love of his life, Sandra, beginning a marriage that spanned over five decades (54 years) and  was blessed with three children, adding an unofficial adopted daughter later.

For nearly three decades, Dusty dedicated his career to inspiring students as a band director and music educator, teaching in Centerville, Conroe, Kirbyville, Bay City, Columbia-Brazoria, and Sweeny Independent School  Districts. Through his work, he encouraged countless young musicians to  strive for excellence and to love music as deeply as he did. His professional affiliations included Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association.

In 2000, Dusty followed a higher calling when he was ordained into the Gospel Ministry. He went on to serve faithfully in churches across West Columbia, Seguin, and Point Blank, leading congregations in worship and strengthening their faith through song and service. A man of strong moral character, Dusty believed in holding himself and others to the highest standards—a reflection of his devotion to both family and God.

Outside of his professional and ministerial life, Dusty found joy in life's simple pleasures. In his youth, he loved roller skating, bowling, and running track.  Alongside his best friend, fraternity brother and eventual best man, Tim Heileman, many games of Astros baseball were watched and spades were  played, re-played and fussed over. Music remained a lifelong passion, and he began leading singing in church at just sixteen. Later in life, after retiring in Oakhurst, he found peace in woodworking, tending to his yard, and caring for his beloved trees.

Dusty is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, Joshua Rhodes, Daniel Rhodes, Tabitha Tesch and husband Clay, and Kristi Kelton Rhodes; his sisters, Theresa Foreman and Gina Billings and husband Steve; grandsons Jericho Vansyckle, Caleb Rhodes, and Josiah Vansyckle, and many who were touched by his strength and kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mitzi Marshall and granddaughter Michal Lynn Rhodes.

A memorial service celebrating Dusty's life will be held at Heritage Oak Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas, on October 25, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with Bro. Larry Craig and Bro. Patrick Gernenz officiating. Dusty will be remembered always for his deep faith, unwavering honesty, and the music he shared so generously with all who knew him. We grieve not as those who have no hope, but as those who have the assurance of future reunions. When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!
