Herman Alton Myers was born September 8, 1949, in Crockett, Texas.

He graduated from Kennard High School in Kennard, Texas, where he loved sports and excelled in basketball.

His love for sports led him to become a star player for the Kennard High Tigers basketball team from 1964 - 68. Herman was known for being the team's best shooter and high-scoring point guard. His talent and versatility lead the team to win 2 back-to-back Texas State Championships. Herman convinced his basketball coach, Johnny Carter, to write a book about their team's success and road to a championship; The book was published in May 2011.

After high school, Herman went to Angelina College and continued on to attend Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He was a true Bearkat through and through. He graduated in 1973, with a Bachelor of Science.

Herman's career started in December 1971, where he spent 28 loyal years with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville, Texas, as the purchasing manager within the Business and Finance Division. After retiring in 1999, Herman kept himself busy by mowing lawns all around the city of Huntsville.

Herman married Nancy Tapanila on January 11, 1985.

He had a great love of his family, friends, and being outdoors. Herman enjoyed spending his time giving tractor rides to his grandsons, around and around they would go. He also had an affinity for fishing, crossword puzzles, and playing horseshoes with his friends. Another thing Herman really liked was food and snacks, there was nothing he wouldn't eat, from cheeseburgers with homemade chips, to peanuts and pork skins. He was an avid player of the lottery and enjoyed visiting casinos, even getting lucky a few times. Going back to Herman's original love of sports, he attended nearly every Sam Houston State basketball game - once a Bearkat, always a Bearkat.

Herman's greatest pleasure and pride was his family and grandchildren.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Luna Maye Myers and Harley Jefferson Myers; and brother, Charlie Walter Myers.

Immediate family members that will cherish his memory are his loving wife, Nancy Myers; his children, Thompson Myers; Shannon Tapanila and wife Kacie; Trina Tapanila and wife Lesley; beloved grandchildren; his brother, Jeff Myers (Donna Cox); and sisters, Shirley Lee Allen, and Nelda Arrow (Ronnie).

Herman Myers led a very busy, loving, happy and fulfilling life. He passed away in Huntsville, Texas on July 10, 2023. Herman will be deeply missed and remembered by all his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 16, 2023, beginning at 3pm at First Christian Church, 1800 Ave R, Huntsville, Texas, where Herman attended for many years. Visitation with the family will be held at 2pm, one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Christian Church of Huntsville.
