Hattye Delores Palmer Owens was born January 21, 1931, in Walker County to James and Phyliss Palmer.
Her greatest loves included her faith, education and service to her community. Mrs. Owens transitioned October 4, 2022.
In 1956, she married the love of her life Edward Glenn Owens. Sr. The couple has a son, Edward Glenn Owens Jr, who is married to Rissie. From this marriage was born Mrs. Owens; grandson, Edward Glenn Owens III (Trey). Mrs. Owens sincerely cherished being a wife, mother, and grandmother.
Mrs. Owens graduated from Sam Houston High School in Huntsville, Texas. She earned a Bachelor's and a Master's of Science degrees in Biology from Prairie View A&M University. Mrs. Owens received additional educational training at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas, and Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas.
After graduation, Mrs. Owens returned to her alma mater, Sam Houston High School, to teach Biology, General Science, and Algebra I. She remained there until the Huntsville Independent School District desegregated. She transferred to Huntsville High School to teach Biology I and Biology II and was appointed sponsor of the Texas Future Teachers Club. Later, she became the chairman of the Science Department until her retirement. During the summers, Mrs. Owens was employed as a Research Assistant at Prairie View A&M University in association with the National Science Foundation. After retirement, she was hired by two elementary schools in the Houston School District to provide hands-on activities to help teachers develop expertise in the Texas Elementary In-Service Program (TESIP).
She was a devoted member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville for 64 years, where she served as the church clerk and a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Huntsville Community Choir. Mrs. Owens was also a respected member of numerous service organizations including Huntsville Arts Commission, Huntsville Education Foundation (secretary), Delta Sigma Sorority, Inc., Election Judge, Huntsville Public Library Board, Walker County Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Order of Easter Star, and a member of The Bracken Fellowship Club. Awards include University Biology Teacher Award, Outstanding Alumni Award - Samuel Houston National Alumni Assoc. and Top Ten Biology Teacher Region VI ESC.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dora Harrison, and her brothers: James Palmer, George Palmer, Calvin Palmer (twin brother), and Lawrence (Pete) Palmer. Her husband also preceded her in death in 2012.
She leaves a host of family and friends to cherish her memory. She is survived by her son Edward Glenn Owens, Jr. and his wife Rissie, grandson Edward Glenn Owens III (Trey), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
