Albert Eugene "Gene" Ballew Sr. passed Sunday, May 5, 2024. Husband, father, grandfather, brother, servant of God and friend to many, he was loved deeply. He was born October 16, 1937, to Ervin C. Ballew and Amelia Thomas in Burnet, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Marie Pursley Ballew, brothers Charles T. Ballew, Donald Ballew, Rodney Ballew, and Larry Word.

Survivors are spouse Lorita Steely Ballew, son Gene Ballew Jr. and wife Sarah Toole Ballew, granddaughters Tara and Rachel, Sister Charlotte Harling, Brother E.C. Ballew, and a number of nephews and nieces.

Gene was a great worker but more important he was a greater father, husband, grandfather, friend and patriot. He began working as a young adult on the farm, as well working with his father as an electrician. He was a man that believed in hard work, respect for others, enriching the land, and helping his fellow man.

He was a 1956 graduate of New Waverly where he participated in football, track, and softball. He was also a proud member of the New Waverly FFA. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country. After his discharge from the Navy he began his career with Southwestern Bell, retiring in 1992.

Gene was a recognized leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as Bishop, teacher, as well as serving in the Houston Temple. His sense of humor brightened all around him. As a leader of youth, he tried to shape their lives based on the Christian principles of his life that was illustrated in everything he did. Gene was a man of God, possessing extraordinary strength of character and strong Christian beliefs. He served in the Prison Ministry for several years. He lived his life with honor and dignity, always exhibiting a strong and giving spirit and providing unconditionally for his family and friends. He will be remembered by his generosity as he helped so many in times of need.

Unique in every way, he left this earth a better place and blessed everyone that knew him.
